Ankylosing
spondylitis is a painful progressive rheumatic disease usually starting in the late teens or early
20's, mainly affecting the spine but it can also affect other joints, tendons
and ligaments. NASS states that "people who take an active interest
in their condition can positively influence their outcome". The Grimsby
group have been sretching and strengthening their muscles in order to maintan
good posture and reduce aches and pains in an informal, friendly atmorsphere
with the help of Susimala Gaikwad, Senior Physiotherapist and Judith Aisthorpe,
Technical Instructor.If you suffer
from AS you are very welcome to join us not only to exercise but also to
share ideas and experiences with others who have the same condition. The
class runs every Thursday night from the 8th Septmeber, and every second
week in the month we exercise in the Physio' pool too. If you would like
more information please contact Jeanne Murray.
The NASS (National
Ankylosing Spondylitis Society) exercise class at Diane Princess of Wales
Hospital, Grimsby has been providing exercise and advice for almost a year
now. People with newly diagnosed AS also benefit from meeting with people
fo the same condition. This can help motivate them to include regular exercise
in their lives. We appreciate the continued support from Dr. James, Consultant
Rheumatologist and team and Glenna Briggs, Physiotherapy Manager.
